The world is waking up

“Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming, whether you like it or not.”

¡Saludos desde Barcelona!

Greta Thunburg’s words to state leaders at the UN last week have echoed around the world.

All over the planet brave kids like Greta are speaking truth to power. They are raising the alarm. And out of their rage, their determination, and their hope, 2019 is shaping up to be a game-changer in the battle for climate justice.

The world is waking up. Change is coming.

From Sydney to Vienna, Wellington to Washington D.C., OPEN groups have been standing with the inspiring leaders of the Fridays for Future movement, helping rally the adults and swell the protests into the global movement we need.

This is what change looks like.

Many of the first photos in the global press were of the massive marches held in Sydney, Melbourne and all around Australia.

In France, a huge coalition of action is being built from across the progressive space. In Germany, 1.5 million people hit the streets. In the Netherlands, Den Haag was full of climate strikers. And New Zealand and Austria both saw some of the biggest turnouts per capita in the world.

And OPEN groups are not only striking for change. The strength of our model comes from the diversity of its targets and tactics. Across the world, we’re throwing everything we have behind the climate movement.

In Australia, GetUp’s First Nations Justice Team is supporting the Power of Country Tour, a national movement of people taking action with remote Aboriginal communities from the Northern Territory, whose land is under threat from fracking.

And all around the network, OPEN organisations are rolling out ambitious strategies to ensure climate change is at the heart of every election campaign, from local government in France to the Canadian federal election this month.

Change is coming. Not because it's inevitable, but because people like the members of the OPEN Network and activists like you are making it happen. It is so exciting to be a part of it!

Un abrazo solidario,

Giovanna Alvarez Negretti, Executive Director of OPEN
